Du Bois was professor of Economics at Atlanta University 1897-1910 and wrote several books during that time including his influential "The Souls of Black Folk" (1903). He was also Chairman of the Department of Sociology at Atlanta University 1934-1944 during which time he wrote his best-known history, "Black Reconstruction in America, 1860-1880" (1935).
