A Pushcart Prize-winning author, Shay Youngblood was an American playwright, author of short stories, novels, and picture books, artist, and educator.

The Big Mama Stories was included on the 2008 "Books All Georgians Should Read" List. Youngblood's children's picture book, Mama's Home was the Georgia Young Readers' Selection for the Roadmap to Reading: "Great Reads From Great Places" at the 2023 Library of Congress National Book Festival.
