Notes of Interest

"Bill Arp" was the pen name of Charles Henry Smith who wrote letters that were published in many Southern newspapers. Known for writing homespun humor in dialect, his views on race and white supremacy helped in the development of the "Lost Cause" mythology that would dominate perceptions of the Southern Confederacy for decades to come.
